As you might already know, Iran is an Islamic country with rules based on Sharia laws, Which means hijab is an essential element in women’s clothes. There are also limitations in men’s wear that you should be informed about.

  • As a woman, you cannot wear sleeveless clothes. In addition, your legs should be covered down to ankles. So avoid wearing tops and short.

 

  • Hair should be covered. It does not mean you shall have a tight scarf around your head. Don’t worry, it is very usual that some parts remain out of the cover.

  • Body:Should be covered with loose clothes, coat or manteau. Arms should not be bare. Long dresses for Muslim ladies are common. Women in Iran wear long tunics or Cardigans called “Manteau”. These are long sleeved dresses varying in length

 

  • It’s a false belief that the female dress code in Iran comes with the limitation of color. There are absolutely no restrictions in color. While unfortunately, there is a tendency for dark-colored clothing in Iranian women.

 

  • Sandals and open toes are perfectly fine for both women and men to wear in Iran

 

  • The only times when foreign women must wear a chador are when visiting important shrines. In these instances, the chadors can almost always be borrowed on-site.

  • Make up and painted nails have nothing to do with Iran dress code. In fact, if you are into makeup, you are going to enjoy your time in Iran. You will find many locals wearing all kinds of makeup styles. Also, painted nails are just fine. If you had time, you can even make an appointment for a beauty salon and spa to try their features.

Iran dress code for men

Dress code for men in Iran is nothing serious. It’s basically no shorts and no tank tops. It’s ok to wear shorts if you’re somewhere close to the beach but it’s best to be avoided in towns and cities.
